Ethically made stuffed animals are truly life changing for people like Gabriel and Irma
Artisans like Irma and Gabriel proudly knit our Joobles collection. Prior to being hired to knit, the couple lived in a shantytown outside of Lima, Peru where they had come from the countryside ten years earlier in search of a better life. The better life didn’t come easily, but since being hired, they have upgraded their home two times and now live in a brick house in a neighborhood where both of their children can attend public school – something Irma said was her ultimate dream. She was never able to attend.

A small family business with a big (and positive) impact on people’s lives
While small family businesses are almost unheard of in toy production, this one, run by Javier and Elsa stands apart. Their business grows its own organic cotton, runs its own small-batch sewing factory in Lima, Peru, and serves as a central hub for dozens of tiny knitting cooperatives who would never get their hand knit products to market without Javier and Elsa’s expertise, assistance, and passion for helping others. These tiny knitting cooperatives are the birth places for The Joobles – our organic stuffed animals and baby accessories. We like to refer to Javier and Elsa as Los Abuelos de Los Joobles – The Grandparents of The Joobles.

Pure Organic Cotton
Our organic Tanguis cotton is grown without GMO’s or pesticides on a small family-owned farm in the climactically perfect Pisco region of Peru. Tanguis cotton is softer, stronger, and lasts longer than lesser quality cottons.

Baby-safe dyes
All of our dyes are tested to the most stringest safety standards such as the Oeko-tex 100 standard. They’re tested to be safe for farmers, knitters, and babies alike. The tests ensure hundreds of dangerous substances like Azo colorants, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, cadmium, and nickel are not present. Our dyes meet or exceed the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) regarding lead and the Eurpean Chemical Regulation (REACh).

Hand knit with love
Each Jooble item is hand knit at small cooperatives – from two-person operations to a couple dozen. The income earned by the cooperatives is truly transformative for the lives of families living in some of the most impoverished areas of Peru.

A perfect sustainable baby gift
Taking care of your baby, taking care of the earth, and taking care of its people. With all this goodness, it’s no wonder the Joobles bring pure joy to everyone who meets them.

Delightfully Cute and Fair Trade Too!
When I was young, my favorite stuffed animal was “Lambie”. My Lambie was white with natural cotton fur and a little bow around its neck. I adored Lambie. I carried it around everywhere I went. I am sad to report that I loved it so much that eventually its little head separated from its body. But, of course, my mom repaired it. That is what love is about. The connection a child makes with a stuffed animal is a daily practice in compassion. In empathy. In caring for something outside of oneself. This Cutie the Lamb reminds me of my own Lambie. It’s made by hand with love. In this case, the creators are a fair trade organization based in Peru. The workers are paid living wages so they can afford to feed their families. Does this mean that Cutie costs a little more than sweat shop creations? Absolutely, and that’s the point! This is a model that we should ALL be following. Treat craftspeople with respect. Honor their efforts. Adore the things they make for us.Cutie the Lamb has a pink body and rose-colored arms and legs. Cutie has a sewn-on neck ribbon and yellow ears. It’s a delightful companion for any child. And I would go further than that. I think adults could use to have some cuteness and joy in their own lives. Is there something about being an adult that says we can no longer feel joy at seeing something cute? Maybe sit it on a shelf or in with plants or books? We all need something to remind us every once in a while that life is to be enjoyed. To be cherished.

Awesome fair trade toy
I am so happy with this little lamb! It’s super soft and cuddly, my daughter loves it. It seems to be very well made, so hopefully it will survive a trip through the washer, when the time comes.

A cute, well made toy, but…
Really cute toy but I didn’t realise that it was stuffed with polyester — which is essentially very finely spun plastic — which if you know anything about microplastics you’ll know is polluting our environment and potentially damaging our health… so if your baby/child stuffs this into their mouth the weave of the knit means they can potentially ingest the fine polyester stuffing. In my opinion ending up ingesting plastic – a known endocrine disruptor.Given the price of this toy it’s a real shame that they didn’t go the extra mile to make the whole toy a safer option. A better alternative stuffing for this toy would be corn fibre or wool – healthier for baby and healthier for the environment.
