Attractive, but Delicate Kitchen Sink, Push Button, Drain Stopper/Sieve
Standard American kitchen sinks connect to plumbing via a 3½” wide Drain Body Funnel, into which is inserted a combination strainer basket and drain plug. My traditional Kohler basket is made from 0.03” thick stainless steel with 0.18” wide circular perforations in the base. The stopper is a heavy metal disc plunger that, when in the down position, depends upon its weight to seal against the outlet drain throat, with a peripheral rubber gasket. (see photos)This strainer/drain plug works differently. The stopper body itself seals against the cylindrical sides of the sink drain funnel, with a silicone rubber flange. Though the ads show it being used with only one flange/gasket, it did not contour to my kitchen sink outlet drain well and, as it came with two flange/gaskets, I used both (see photos) to make a terrific seal: so good that it was mildly difficult to remove. A plastic spring-loaded plunger seals against the bottom of the body itself with a rubber disc. A strainer sieve made from .019” thick stainless sits like a hat over the plunger and body bottom. However the sieve metal is so thin, that it could easily be deformed by finger pressure. A decorative bronze button cap depresses the plastic sealing plungerThe sieve has 1 mm wide openings. After filling my sink with equal amounts of water, I measured the time to drain and determined that the Kohler, due to its much larger holes, drained 40% faster. Having much larger holes, it also passed more debris. Either stopper can be removed in its entirety to drain more quickly.In summary: this drain stopper is more attractive; seals and filters debris better, albeit more slowly, than the traditional stopper, but is flimsy. Thus 4 Stars. Had it been made from the same quality & thickness stainless steel as the Kohler, I would have rated it 5 Stars
